I fear all insect repellents have a strong smell. But if it is not working you could try a different brand. A brand named moskito safe seems to work for me. We have also tried odomos and it works OK. With a spray, we also use roll on, so double mosquito repellents

How old is your baby? Do anyone in your family have asthama background? Are you using it indoor or outdoor?; Any repellant spray is good for outdoor use. That's my personal opinion. And also... You need to take very less amount. I am using it when I go outdoor and on trips. It has worked like wonder for me.
