Mistaking Gagging for Choking Occasionally, from fear of choking, parents provide only smooth ,thin foods that are easily swallowed long after the infant is ready for more challenging foods, and the infant misses out on the sensorimotor skills experiences that improve eating skills. When parents first see gagging ,they often assume the child (1) is choking;(2) doesn't like the food; or (3) is uncomfortable .The child usually swallows after gagging and moves on to the next bite.
Gagging is a normal response when the infant is learning to eat more textured food .Choking ,by contrast happens when food moves into the windpipe so the child cant breathe. Vital tip for every young parent to remember while feeding the young kids....If the parents gets upset ,the child may take cues from the parent that what happened was scary and ....picky eating starts !
