It's a myth. Babies will cry especially when they are very young because they are in a new environment and being with the mother with familiar touch and sound is comforting. Having baby on lap you may spill food on baby and it may be hot or spicy which can create a problem.

I was asked to not eat while holding the baby in the initial months..

I think its said because we have seen where babies cries only when mumma is seated comfortably to eat their food. May be this will reduce the crying, but to me feeding the baby from same plate is not good idea and not hygienic as well. When they grow let them eat what we eat but giving them in seperate plate is good and it's manners as well. My father was very strict when it comes to eating etiquette and I'm very proud I still follow all that.
