‘Mumma you only look beautiful with makeup on..’

Over the years, the definition of beauty has changed. You might be wondering what has really changed? Well it was this little girl of mine who talked something out of the box and left me astonished to say the least.

One day I forgot putting on makeup which I generally do on a daily basis. Simra noticed that instantly and commented that I don’t look beautiful..and I should apply some lipstick. I told her I don’t feel like doing makeup today, she made a weird face saying ‘Mumma you only look beautiful with makeup on..’ I couldn’t explain her then and there, I started to show through my actions. I stopped putting on makeup on a daily basis..literally! I am still in the process of making her understand the real beauty lies in being ‘natural’.

How come girls are generally more concerned with how they look? And as a society we have normalised it, however, if a guy admits to wearing a lot of make up, he is looked down upon. Why do we feel pressurised to look beautiful? why?

The question that needs to be asked is what is beauty? Is beauty the complete symmetry of the face or your lip structure? Is it your skin colour or even your body shape?
Is looking pretty dressing up as per the societal expectations or is beauty genuinely being kind and compassionate?

I believe that true beauty comes from inside, despite knowing that, people judge you on how you look. Does looking beautiful come naturally or being beautiful means applying layers of harmful make up on your face?
