On last Sunday, we three Vibhu, Papa and I went for another most awaited movie "The Lion King". This is the second movie in line after Aladdin when Vibhu was the force for booking tickets. He has started understanding that watching movies on the bigger TV (as he assumes) with a box of popcorn is the happiness of different level.
My 5 year old thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Even we had to scold him many times to just keep mum, as he went on repeating dialogs being overjoyed. And there were many kids of his age in the hall, so all of them made a rhythm in laughing and shouting whenever they got thrilled. I was happy that my boy enjoyed the flick and our outing went well. However, as a parent, I was a little disappointed with the movie. Keep on reading, you will get to know why!
We went for Hindi dubbed version of the movie. One of the most loved actors of our own Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan dubbed as Mufasa and his son Aryan Khan as Simba, the grown-up. The overall Hindi voice cast is a delight actually. Ashish Vidyarthi as Scar gives the required dimension to the character. The gang of hyenas speaks in Bhojpuri. And my favorite Pumbaa (dubbed by Sanjay Mishra) and Timon (by Shreyas Talpade) speak in tapori style. They make you laugh and you miss them when they are not in the plot.
The Lion King is an extravaganza. 3D visuals are stunning and you enjoy every detail to the finest level. However, emotion wise, the movie seems weak. Like, you do feel sad when Mufasa is killed but you are not moved to tears, like with the original The Lion King movie (1994). I cry in almost every movie, but I did not this time. Maybe, because it is difficult to show emotions on the faces of real looking animals. I am a big lover of animated 1994 "The Loin King" and somewhere my expectation was the same entertainment, the same innocent emotions of Simba, and the same fun of Timon and Pumba duo. But I felt no character was given a chance to do the full justice. 2019’s The Lion King is a "live-action", "latest technology" remake of the old animated movie. Everything happens so fast and your movie ends as an act of revenge is done. As a parent, I wanted my young boy to witness more of the joyful moments than to just see how Scar ends.
With that, don't think that I am saying you should not go to the movie. It is certainly worth a watch and you should go with your kids. It is a movie for them. And if you do understand Hindi, go for Hindi dubbed version. You will connect to it more. But back home, make your kids watch the original movie 1994's The Lion King. It has its own flavor and ability to touch the hearts of people. #BBCreatorsclub#Vibhuandmesay#LionKing#movie#review
