Dear Gayatrib Varma,
Children acquire milestones at their own pace... Usually there is a buffer of few weeks.
Also girls tend to pick up language earlier than boys.
Speech and Language are independent of each other and still connected.
Is ur child able to follow instructions given? Is he able to communicate his needs to u in some form, if not in spoken word? Does he pay attention to others? Is he able to hear clearly? Is he able to say various sounds?
The best time to get professional help would be around 2 or 2.5 yrs. That's the time late bloomers kind of catch up with their milestones and then there is no looking back.
What could u do now at home to augment his language development in the meantime is
1. Model appropriate language (strictly no baby talk when communicating with him) Talk to ur child.
2. Sing songs
3. Tell stories
4. Lots of pretend play for conversations. U could use toy phone, toy trucks, cars and mock up a car servicing or petrol station etc.
5. Also try activites to strengthen oral muscles like blowing, funny ooo aaaaa sounds etc.
Be as innovative as u can with these games. Make it fun for ur child. Humour works best with children.
Be Creative and Have fun !!!
