They play a vital role in environment, water purification , flood control , shoreline stability and they act as Carbon sinks .
Wetlands occur; where land meets water.They include mangroves, peatlands and marshes, rivers and lakes, deltas, floodplains and flooded forests, rice-fields, and even coral reefs. Wetlands exist in every country and in every climatic zone, from the polar regions to the tropics, and from high altitudes to dry regions.
Chilka also a Ramsar site, is one of the most important Wetlands in the world because it is home to a phenomenal variety of birds .
