Newborns have a soft skull which allows them to pass from the birth canal. For the baby’s skull to develop completely, it takes around 9-18 months.
Having a flat area on the side or on the back of the head is quite common in newborns. This flattened portion could be a result of repeated pressure experienced in that area which could happen due to the position of the baby in the womb, multiple pregnancies, or the baby lying on his/her back for long hours. This uneven shape of the head could be corrected or got in shape in the first 6 weeks of life.
A few things to do to manage this includes:

Pick up your baby and hold him/her in an upright position more often to take the pressure off his/her head which in turn improves head control and strengthens the neck muscles. This also helps to reduce the pressure caused on the head while lying on the back for long hours.
When the baby is awake, try placing your baby on their side to play.
Give your baby some tummy time during the day to strengthen the muscles and also support the head shaping.
Use “U-shaped” baby pillows to avoid pressure caused on the back of the head when lying on the back.
Gently massage your baby’s head daily during their massage time.
