NURSING NIGHT WEAR
Breastfeeding is a mind-game. Any discomfort in the process of breastfeeding can lead to a put off and end up in a bad mind-game. So, the process of breastfeeding has to be comfortable for mom and the baby.

We know that, proper positioning of mom and baby, correct latching and healthy nipple etc. are essential for breastfeeding. Likewise, comfortable clothing is also important for breastfeeding.

Inspired and motivated by all the breastfeeding articles and stories that I read on Babychakra during my pregnancy, I was keen and determined to breastfeed my baby. So, I wanted to be comfortable while breastfeeding my baby such that I do not get distracted while breastfeeding my baby due to any kind of discomfort. I searched for a lot of nursing night wear, lingerie, kurtis, tops and tunics etc online and even in stores available here in the local market. I bought different types of maternity clothes and tried them out while desperately struggling to breastfeed my baby. Unfortunately, I failed to breastfeed my baby beyond 3 months. But the market survey and my hands-on experience with the clothes in these 3 months has given me a lot of insight about it. I want to share it all in this post in order to help the confused new moms in purchasing the correct maternity wear for themselves without having to waste any bucks on hit-&-trials; like I did.

Earlier lactating-stay-at-home moms ditched the bra and blouse for ease in breastfeeding. But the modern woman wants to breastfeed in her privacy and the privacy shouldn't restrict her to be locked within four walls of her room either. She even wants to breastfeed in public with privacy and comfort being intact. Some clothing brands have come up with nursing night wears having different types of openings for the breasts to come out for feeding comfortably.

I have classified them in a flow chart and jotted down some positives and negatives of each style as per my experience with them. I hope it helps you to decide for yourself.

1) The zipped front open nightwear without a cover

+ most popular piece

+ easily available everywhere in local markets.

-bares open the whole chest while breastfeeding

-a shawl is necessary while feeding

2) The zipped front open night wear with a cowl cover

+ cover helps to maintain privacy while feeding

+preterm babies can be given KMC too with this

+no extra shawl required

3) The vertically zipped side opening night wear

- Openings are small

- The open zip restricts the breast

- Feels itchy

4) The horizontally zipped side opening night wear

+large openings

+the zip remains hidden when zipped up

- Still moms with bigger breast may feel restricted and itchy.

5) The non-zipped vertically side opening night wears have a free inner flap.

a) Inner flap is raised up and outward while the outer edge is pulled down and inward to free the breast for feeding.

+highly comfortable

+no zips to restrict or itch

+best for night feeding

-bares the breast in use, so extra cover is required under the light and around people.

b) Inner flap is raised up and inward while the outer edge is pulled down and outward.

+ highly comfortable

+no zips to restrict or itch

+best for night feeding

- bares the breast in use, so extra cover is required under the light and around people.

-big breasts may feel a bit pulled up leading to uncomfortable positioning

6) The vertically front open night wear.

+ intelligently designed with an elasticated skirt below the bust and a neck flap covering the bust.

+both breasts can be free together for feeding

+privacy intact: no extra cover required.

-very few options available

-may not be available locally
