One of the most important infant supplement is IRON..
Babies are born with Iron stores which they will manage for about 4-6months..
Points to be kept in mind:-
1.Full term babies who are exclusively BF are given iron supplement at 4months of age..
2.Pre-mature and Low birth weight may have less iron stores-so doc may recommend till one year..
3.Formula fed babies need not to have supplement as it ll be present in formula..
4.If baby is more than 6months who is exclusively BF and not having food then iron supplement should be given..
5.After starting solid foods for 6months old babies, start giving iron rich foods like cereals, beans, tomatoes, leafy veggies, fruits etc twice a day..

Point 3 is not true as my baby was formula fed but was still advised iron supplement. Breastfed babies typically don't require any supplements if the weaning foods and the iron intake in mother's diet is right.
