Post 1- The journey leading up to today

Living in an Indian family, if you don’t miss your period in the first month after shaadi, then the moms brains go ticking into an overdrive. My mom had even suggested we visit the infertility doctor a mere 4 months after my wedding. Yes that’s just the kind of society we live in. Even though my mom-in-law did not ask me anything directly, but whenever I would call her she would say “tabiyat kaisi hai” (How’s your health?) instead of “kaise ho” (how are you?) as if almost wanting the answer that I am having morning sickness.

7 months after my wedding I conceived my son. I was over the moon! My pregnancy was an uneventful as could be. I had no vomiting. I was just sleepy and hungry. Yes that pretty much sums up my pregnancy woes. Although the fifth month onwards I developed this peculiar backache in a very small spot which was only relieved by lying down or standing. Good thing it went off after delivery.

I ate right, did yoga and worked throughout my pregnancy. I even completed my Family Medicine Diploma course and got a distinction. But all good things come to an end. I hadn’t even given cesarean section a thought and was confident of having a normal delivery. But all that changed when my ultrasound at 38 weeks showed the fluid had decreased and the baby was in danger. The doctor induced labour and I tolerated the pains for 14 hours. At the end of 14 hours, the baby’s heartbeat started to go down and since my dilation wasn’t progressing, they decided to go for an emergency cesarean section.

I wept bitterly when they said I needed to be cut open. I felt like I had failed as a mother even before my child was born. Infact on my internal examination, my doctor said “why isn’t your cervix cooperating?!” Because not dilating was my fault. And that is how it is. We are the victims yet we are spoken to as the culprit. This was the first instance of mom-shaming I had and I refuse to be held responsible for not delivering normally (as if that is even a crime).
