Post 5- Not repeating my mistakes and moving forward
When my son got a little older, I started practicing and I saw more and more postpartum women with the same journeys as mine. Feeding and medical problems aside, discouragement, pressure and judgement from the elders in the house was such a rampant issue and yet swept under the rug. I spent time listening to these women vent and counseled them and encouraged their breastfeeding attempts helping the technical aspects along the way. It was truly a rewarding experience to see moms conquer their breastfeeding demons and move forward. I had always been fond of writing so I started penning down my experiences and that of my patients. Many patients complained about the traditional postpartum care practiced at home and how they would rather not follow it. They reasoned that they could not find any medical backing for these practices on the internet. I was getting more and more invested in this cause. I saw myself reap the benefits of traditional Indian postpartum care like maalish, ghee in the diet and confinement at home. The more I researched, the more I got convinced about these practices. Learning from my past mistakes, I did not let them recur when my second baby was born and I managed to exclusively breastfeed her. Encouraged by my personal victory, I wrote daily after my second child was born when she took her mid-morning nap. Soon I had a big fat book at hand and started enquiring with literary agents and frequented book festivals. I pitched my book to labyrinth agency and voila landed myself an agent. He loved the premise of my book but said my content needed to be crisper and more concise. A full year of editing later, we landed a book deal with none other than PanMacmillan publishers. It was so fulfilling to see an established agent and a renowned publishing house believe in my vision of supporting new mothers and have an empathetic mother as well as qualified doctor validate their woes and worries and so to speak hold their hand through their postpartum journeys. My book will release in 2020 and even if a few mothers find their voices echoed in it and it helps even one mother achieve exclusive breastfeeding then all my hard work would have paid off. #momstein#mommytakesover#bbcreatorsclub Pics Got signed by a publisher!
