Vibhu, my 5 year old boy asked why the sisters tie Rakhi to the brothers. Like a typical Indian mother who wishes to imbibe all traditional and cultural values in her child, I explained him the complete significance of Rakhi. He listened to everything quietly.
.
He then confirmed that tying Rakhi meant the brother is supposed to keep his sister safe all the time. To this I nodded Yes. He was mum for a few seconds. And then said "Sisters should learn to keep themselves safe also. Brothers may always not be able to reach where they are. Sisters go to school, movie or shopping without their brothers. If anyone comes to harm them, they should be able to fight back."
.
Now it was my turn to stay silent. I could just say "you are right bachcha.."
.
Is there any better reply that I should have given to my son?
