Potty Training Tips For First Time Moms Potty training has always been one of my biggest apprehensions ever since I became a mum. But as soon as my girl turned two, I knew I had to take this seriously. For all the new mums who feel the same, here I share some of the tips and opinions that helped me with potty training my toddler.
1. Stay Patient
Potty training a toddler is going to take more time than you ever thought. You may have come across Pinterest or blog posts that claim to potty train your child within three days or so. But in reality, it takes more than a month. Stay calm and patient for all the accidents that might happen.
2. Stay Alert
Your child has been peeing and pooing in his diapers for more than a year. To ensure he gets the sense, you need to be alert literally every day. Take him to the toilet every thirty minutes even if he claims or insists that he doesn't want to.
3. Make him understand
To ensure that your child actually understands how to use the toilet, you need to let him watch how you do. If required and if possible, put the toilet seat in the washroom. Sit over the toilet seat or squat as per your choice. Show him the real position. Until and unless you actually demonstrate, the kid won't ever understand.
4. Don't Be Angry
There will be accidents. There will be wet bedsheets. No matter what may happen, never ever yell or be angry at your child. This can create further trauma and depression that can delay your potty training than expected.
5. Don't Quit Diapers Absolutely
Don't ditch the diapers all of a sudden. If your child stays unwell out of nowhere, while you're trying to potty train him, don't force him. If he has fever all of a sudden, make him wear diapers only for that period. Your training can postpone for a while but not your child's health.
6. Pick The Hints
Kids after a certain age actually show symptoms that they are ready to be trained. They may pull the undergarment or may stand still and look down. Take up these hints and instantly take them to the toilet. Delaying for even a minute can make you soon clean a room.
