If your periods are so irregular then ovualtion test kit will not be helpful to you. Since you dont get periods monthly, its very likely that you don't ovulate every month. And if everything is normal then in such case try being intimate every alternate day.

are you overweight or HV PCOD..that leads to irregular periods.. exercise regularly & HV good nutritious food..everything adds up eventually to conception.. ur gyanec can guide u better..maybe take a second opinion
