Neither of my children were born “naturally.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first was an emergency after 40 hours of labor, 1 hour of active pushing but no descent, and a fading heartbeat. We discovered the umbilical cord was wrapped around him three times and once he was out, I hemorrhaged.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The second was planned, but early. A larger incision was needed to protect both of us - and it did.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Naturally” is a term that implies there’s also an “unnatural” way to give birth, which then allows others to pass judgement on a deeply emotional and personal event.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In either situation, a “natural” birth would have likely killed them, me, or both.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m proud of myself, my doctors, and my children and I will wear that pride forever on my body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It doesn’t matter how they got here, but that they’re here."
