Solar eclipse riddled pregnant women.

By Dr Nikhil D Datar (Gynaecologist)

The first patient I saw today morning was accompanied by her mother in law. After the consultation the mother in law asked me about the Solar eclipse and I realised what is going to happen during the day.  I asked her  about what did she do on the day of lunar eclipse which occurred just few days back. Her mother looked very upset with the sun and moon. She asked “Why the sun and the moon are playing mischief repeatedly only when her daughter in law is pregnant?” She also informed me that today’s eclipse was a solar eclipse and was a “major eclipse”. She was most worried about the bad rays that will be emitted during the time and its ill effects on the baby.

For those who have not read my article on eclipse (published on Facebook page Mygynaec) should definitely read it. It talks about the myths around eclipse.
Today I have decided to burst the myths with a simple logic. Before that let me take you to the genesis of solar eclipse. As you can see the image below, when the earth, moon and sun come in the straight line, the moon blocks the sun light. Those on the earth suddenly stop seeing the sun for some time. It is obvious that only those parts of the earth where there is day light will perceive this classic effect of sun slowly disappearing and reappearing. The rest of the earth where there will be night will not see anything.

In this context let us understand what is going to happen today. When the moon will block the sun it will be day in the US and night in Indian subcontinent. Thus the phenomenon will be seen in the whole of the US. In short we will practically not be experiencing the eclipse.

Yet the myths of “bad rays” emitted during the eclipse do come haunting. Any ray can only travel in the straight line. It cannot take a reverse turn. Can it?  So those of us who are going to be in the night while the eclipse occurs are “saved”. It the turn of American mothers and mother in laws to be worried about.  So our daughters are safe for now.

So my message is amply clear… don’t believe in myths believe in science and logic.
