Some days back, my toddler faced this situation. So felt like talking about it
A very common skin condition among our kids ATOPIC DERMATITIS
- Word atopic as it says “out of place”
- Common among children and can present upto adulthood
- starts at quite a young age especially with similar family history of atopic diseases
- Type of skin inflammation
- Long lasting condition which flares periodically
- can be accompanied by asthma or hay fever
- It basically presents with rough, dry, irriatable skin or might present as icty redness, rash.
Causes:
1. Hereditary onset
2. Immune dysfunction
3. Environmental related : weather change (winters), pollution, aeroallergens, stress, exercise induced sweat , food related ( milk , eggs , peanuts , soy, fish )
4. Infectious in origin
Presentation:
1. Red raised itchy, oozy, scaly lesions
2. Rough dry patchy thickened dark skin
3. predominantly over the face or over the friction areas like elbow, knees, neck, over the hands, legs, eyelids, lips, behind ears
4. With continous itching and straching
5. Can become infected if not treated
6. Can Disturb the sleep 🛌
7. Gets triggered by various factors like:
- dust mite
- Woolen clothes
- Harsh soaps
- Animal fur
- Flowers or pollens
- Food products
For management:
1. Identify and Avoid triggering factors
2. Use moisturing mild syndet soap
3. Avoid prolonged and frequent bathing
4. Use lukewarm water for bathing
5. Regular use of good moisturizers immediately after bath (MUST) and before sleeping
6. Using soft cotton fabrics
7. Gentle use of towels
8. Using topical corticosteroids
9. Getting treated for the underlying infections
10. Antiallergic drugs - antihistaminics
