The Super Food: Quinoa and its Health Benefits for Kids

The theme of the National Nutrition Week for 2017 is “Optimal infant and Young Child Feeding Practices : Better Child Health”. When I read about it, my motherly instincts immediately led me to start surfing for some super foods for kids. One of the super foods which I came across is Quinoa. Quinoa is included in one of the world’s healthiest food. It is also very good for children who are in the middle of growing phase.
So, what makes me write about this particular super food? Well, I was simply fascinated by it’s truly amazing health benefits especially for the kids. Here, are the nutrients that make quinoa a truly super food.
1. High Calcium-
We all know that calcium is extremely important for the development of bones in growing children. Quinoa has high amount of calcium along with Vitamin D which is important for its natural absorption.
2. Complete Protein-
Quinoa is one of the best plant based source of protein. Protein is required for keeping and building tissue for our body. It also helps in building the immune system in children and preventing illnesses.
3. A Great Antioxidant-
Antioxidants which are present in this super food are helpful for fighting radicals in children’s body. Radicals can be harmful for the body and can cause some serious illnesses.
4. Rich Source of Fibre-
Quinoa is a rich source of fibre which helps reducing the risk of obesity in children.
5. High in Iron-
A very important micro nutrient which is extremely beneficial for the development of brain and immune system is iron. Quinoa is highly rich in iron which makes it beneficial for mental and physical health.
6. Good Source of Vitamin-
It is rich in Vitamins like A, D and E. All these micro nutrients are very essential for children for their overall development.

After knowing so much about this super food, I couldn’t refrain myself from trying it. These tiny grains are a gluten free alternative to food. Cooked quinoa seeds become fluffy and creamy yet maintain a slight crunch.

Before cooking it is advised to wash it thoroughly to reduce it’s bitter taste. Put it in a bowl and run it under water.
Quinoa can be roasted or boiled. It takes less time to cook in a pressure cooker but keep in mind to use less water to cook it thoroughly.

Quinoa can be used in smoothies and salads. It goes well with many types of food and can be prepared in many ways.

Growing children need more micronutrients than macronutrients. Micro nutrients are very essential in the brain development as well as in the development of immunity. There are increasing risks of obesity in children. Quinoa, is one grain which comes with all the essential nutrients to meet their needs. So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and include it in your recipes to create some healthy and tasty food for your kids.
