....this was one dish my brother and I would demand for every Sunday! Though my Mom used to make yummy chicken biryani that she learnt from her Mother, this particular Chicken Biryani my Mom learnt from my other granny ie her Mother in law. And like all special things that get passed on..... I now make this for my daughter & hubby, who absolutely love it. Chicken biryani (Gowda Style)
Ingredients:
250gms of chicken, with leg pcs
1 cup regular or jeera rice,
2 onions cut length wise
1 tomato
2-3 tbsp Biryani Masala
1 bay leaf
2-3 cardamom
2-3 cloves
1 tsp jeera
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
2 tbsp curds
Small pc cinnamon
Oil
1 tbsp butter
Ghee

Grind together:
Half a bunch coriander leaves
Half a bunch pudina leaves
2-3 green chillies

Marinade:
1/2 cup thick curds
1 tsp Chilli powder
1 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp ginger garlic paste
1/2 tsp salt

Method:
Wash and the chicken well. Add all marinade items and mix in the chicken and coat well. Refrigerate for at least 2hrs.
Soak rice for 15 mins and drain
In a pressure cooker, add 2tbsp oil once a bit hot add bay leaf, jeera seeds, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and sauté a bit.
Add butter and later add the onions and fry till pink but not fully browned.
Add ginger garlic paste and fry well till no raw smell.
Add the ground coriander paste and mix well. Add the tomato. Mix everything well. Add the marinated chicken with the masala if left.
Add biryani masala. Add the curds. Mix well and let the chicken cook for few mins untill it's half done.
Add the rice and mix well, if regular rice or jeera rice add 2.5 glasses of water or according to water needed to cook the rice.
Mix well and close the cooker. Once done, let the pressure release on its own, don't open the cooker immediately.
After few mins open the cooker use a fork to mix the rice and the masalas. Garnish with fried onions and chopped coriander.
Serve with raitha or brinjal gravy.
