During steam inhalation, the warm and moist air works in loosening the mucus in nasal passages, throat and lungs. It does not cure cold but provides some temporary relief.
Many home remedies are followed without any investigation of its side effects. While some remedies help in relieving from head colds and blocked nose, there could also be side effects.
Following are some of the most popular methods.
1. Using Steam capsules
2. Vicks vapoRub steaming
3. Eucalyptus oil steaming
4. Salt steaming
5. Turmeric powder steaming
Steaming capsules
1. One of the most common method of inhalation for decongestant effect. Snip the end off the capsule and squeeze the contents into hot water, inhale the vapour.
Irritation of the eyes may happen.
2. Vicks vaporub
Contains four active ingredients- levomenthol, eucalyptus oil, turpentine oil and camphor. Mild cooling effects soothe irritation in the lining of the nose, easing breathing and relieving cough. Vicks vaporub is added to hot water to use as a steam inhalation, the warm moisture inhaled in the steam will also help liquify and loosen mucus, allowing the airways to be cleared more effectively.
Irritation of the eyes from inhaling this vapour may happen.
3. Eucalyptus oil
Add 10-15 drops of it in hot water. The hot steam helps to drain the mucus and can open up the sinuses. Treatment of cough, cold, bronchitis, and symptomatic relief of colds and congestion of the upper respiratory tract.
However, Eucalyptus leaves do contain some toxins which may cause serious health problems. Using eucalyptus oil during pregnancy and lactation- there is not enough study that shows its impact. So don't use it without medical advice.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd steaming therapy techniques are not advised for Preggies and breastfeeding moms.
4. Salt water steaming
It's like a saline spray. Inhaling the salt water steam eases the blocks in nasal passages.
5. Turmeric steaming
Why TUMERIC in steaming?
Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and disinfectant, and is used as treatment in several different ways, including steam therapy with turmeric.
Steaming technique:
1. Heat up the water to boiling
2. Ready with your hard bedsheet/quilts in closed room
3. Put 2 to 3 spoons of turmeric powder in the boiled water
4. Drape the quilt over the back of your head. Make to a complete closed setup
5. Shut your eyes and slowly lower your head toward the hot water. Have a deep inhale and exhale
Repeat 3 times in a day for about 10 to 15 minutes. Be extremely careful to avoid making direct contact with the water.
