‘Using a pacifier for your little one - know it’s pros and cons!’
Pacifier is something that is in your control and can be a substitute to mother’s breast at times but using it regularly shouldn’t be a thing for nurturing or feeding. If your little one is still fussy after you’ve fed, burped and cuddled etc, you might just want to see if a dummy can satisfy her just to make her feel calm. In many cases parents use it in between feeds to keep the baby settled that leads to getting habituated and a habit as such is not beneficial in long run.
Although it may reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome(SIDS). Yes you read it right, sucking on a pacifier at nap time and bedtime might reduce the risk of SIDS that happens during sleep. SIDS is an unexplained death, usually during sleep, seemingly healthy baby less than a year old gets effected and reasons can be separation anxiety, position of crib, doesn’t get enough sucking time etc. So, surprisingly pacifiers work wonders to such instances.
Dummies are helpful during air travel because sucking during take-off and landing can reduce ear pressure. It also gave my baby extra sucking time that she needed to comfort when her belly was already full. Longer the breast feeding meant more milk, more milk would have meant more gas. Eventually a gassy baby isn’t a happy one, so then a pacifier works like magic and it means a much less stressed mom. It can also help babies fall asleep soon without even letting them hang on your breasts. Moreover, colic in babies is also benefited using a dummy, which lets the baby to settle after a feed. Nevertheless habit of a pacifier is easier to break than the thumb habit.
Health professionals and paediatricians say the longer your child uses a pacifier, the greater the chances are of affecting dental development. Furthermore, using a pacifier can cause health concerns like oral problems, gastro intestinal issues such as gases in babies, addiction to keep sucking on a pacifier, ear infections etc to name a few. Then there is a myth that pacifiers can cause nipple confusion.
On a personal note, I gave my baby a pacifier, to soothe her when she was fussy but this didn’t make it difficult for her to nurse, since these were two differently shaped scenarios which people get carried away with.
Lastly, few tips that you need to remember if you decide to give her a pacifier. When you use a pacifier, make sure it’s strap isn’t very long that might twist around your baby’s neck. Regular sterilisation, looking for signs if needs a replacement, have an extra back- up pacifiers always in case it gets lost or breaks. And, opt for a dummy that is made out of silicone, avoid putting in honey or sugary substances while giving. #bbcreatorsclub#bbleadersclub#babychakrapost#youngmomjournal#mamaofsimra#pacifier#babyhealth#babyhygiene@Khushboo Chouhan@Madhavi Cholera
