Weaning begins from the moment supplementary food is started and continues till the child is taken off the breast feed completely. There is an increase in activities of enzymes at the time of weaning.
The ideal time to start introducing semi solid food is when a baby is ready to sit up,swallow and eat and taste other foods, the baby's stomach is ready to digest food and the baby has good appetite and accepts food readily and there is no activity in the child.
After 6 months, increasing needs of calories and protein of growing children cannot be met by diminishing output of mother's milk.
.
.
Types of supplementary food:-
1) Milk-At about the sixth month of life the frequency of breastfeeding is reduced to 3 or 4 times per day and diluted cow's milk is substituted.
.
2) Juice/purees of fresh fruits-in early stages the fruit juice is diluted with an equal amount of boiled water and only a couple of teaspoonfull are fed.The amount of fruit juice it is gradually increased while amount of water is decreased.(oranges, grapes, apple, tomatoes)
.
3) Porridges-Oats and Ragi porridge make for good choices for infants when you want to wean them off.
.
4) Vegetables-Cooked, mashed vegetables like potato green leafy vegetables and carrots can be introduced to get vitamins and minerals and colours in the diet.
Cow milk is not recommended till 1 year, babies can't digest milk protein. And breastfeeding should not be reduced at all till year as it is the main source of nutrition till 1 year.
