What is Baby Ghasara or Somva 34?;
Somva 34 or Ghasara is a combination of 34 different Ayurvedic ingredients like Kharek, Haldi, Harde, Jestimal, Jaifal, Badam etc.
It is offered to babies who are as young as few days old to toddler.
How to use it?
You need to scratch these things on a piece of stone using Breast milk or formula milk and give to baby.
Why Ghasara or Somva 34?
It is believed to cure sleeplessness, indigestion stomach pain, crying at night and combat weakness etc.
Though it's been an ancient practice there is no scientific evidence to prove its benefits. None of the moms who have used it have claimed to have a baby sleeping through night, not crying etc.

Why is it a harmful practice?
1. These ingredients are heavy for baby's delicate Kidney and stomach. Please understand that the baby's organs are still developing after coming to the world which is why we don't start solids immediately they are born
2. Anything that induces sleep is unnecessarily triggering the brain to relax which isn't good for babies.
3. Your baby doesn't need sedatives to sleep whole night. It can get them addicted to something wrong which can hamper them in long run.

Sleeping throughout the night is a milestone which they will achieve with time.
4. It can cause serious allergies, effects adversely on their intake on breastmilk.
5. Creates risk of obesity.
6. Hampers digestive system, causes constipation.
7. Just to bring to your notice, water is not advisable to baby below 7 months this is something which is more heavy than water.

(To know more about disadvantages of water check my post)
8. Lastly, before giving anything additional to your baby please check if it is FSSI CERTIFIED and please verify with your Paediatrician.

Importance of Breastmilk and Formula Milk for first 6 months over anything else -
The composition of Breast milk changes throughout the day to meet the needs of child.
The levels of cortisol – a hormone that promotes alertness – are three times higher in morning milk than in evening milk.
Melatonin, which promotes sleep and digestion rises in the evening and peaks around midnight to make baby sleep better.
Night milk also contains higher levels of certain DNA building blocks which help promote healthy sleep.
Day milk, by contrast, has more activity-promoting amino acids than night milk.
Iron in milk peaks at around noon; vitamin E peaks in the evening. Minerals like magnesium, zinc, potassium and sodium are all highest in the morning.
So do you think your baby needs more than this??
Formula feeding is also a healthy choice for babies. If you use a formula, your baby will get the best possible alternative to breast milk. So please don't fall for any wrong practice of making your own formula milk.
Whether your baby is a formula fed or breastmilk, he's getting enough nutrition, is well fed and take cared.
"SO PLEASE DITCH THE MOM GUILT MOMMY! YOU ARE DOING THE BEST FOR YOUR CHILD 🤗"

MAMMALS AND HUMAN BREASFEEDING -
Mammals from bats to zebra too feed their milk to their babies and don't top feed them for certain period. Breastmilk is just not baby food, it's more than nourishment.
Breastmilk has right composition to give the baby the best start in life according to their species, and it's also a way for the mother to share her immune system with the kid.

So mammals understand this but only humans are strange enough to underestimate the power of human milk.
Unfortunately we Indians feel we are way smarter than Paediatricians & love to try ayurvedic methods for everything.

How to tackle with elders disagreement for Somva 34 and Ghasara?
Firstly understand their intentions are right.; They love and care for your child as much as you do.
This is a practice which they have tried on us and believed to be very good for child.
In olden days people were not educated much about the importance of Breastmilk and hence practised ayurvedic methods to strengthen immunity and health for new borns.
Both my moms had pushed us a lot to try Ghasara as me and my husband were fed the same.

The best solution for us was to check with Paediatrician for this and for obvious reasons he denied and explained moms on how harmful it is for the newborns.
Communicate wisely and politely -

It is extremely important to understand that their experience of doing things can never surpass ours! They have raised us and have better experience than us in many things.
In the changing times, scientific researches and change in lifestyle there are many ancient things which are proven wrong.

Show them vidoes and explain them about your research on why it is not good.
The only solution is just as we deal patiently with kids we need to deal patiently with elders.
Respect their opinion and views and convey them right message in a subtle way without making them feel you are rebelling.
