hi dear, epidurals are used to make both normal, as well as c-section painless... for normal delivery, epidural is optional... mobile epidural which would be given in normal delivery, would allow movement, while making labour painless... the chances for a episiotomy(tear near vagina) is higher with epidural as pushing force cannot be determined by the patient... in c-section epidural is definitely required....
Dr Charmi Thakker Deshmukh
epidural is mainly used for a painless normal delivery. a catheter is places in the epidural space assessed from you back and drugs are injected to block the sensation of pain. so you get uterine activity but do not feel the pain. it may be used in certain cases for a ceaserean section also. and after the section it can also be used to prevent post op pain
