Q:

Does anybody have pain in your kneecaps when you sit with your legs bent, or wake up after sleeping with them bent or walking down stairs or climbing up. Also when you try to support yourself with your knees, like squatting, bending over, getting off couch, or getting up off the floor? I am 21weeks and having Horrible knee pain. is this normal in pregnancy??? what can I do about it??

Dr. Riddhi Kataria

Try walking to keep joints supple. Avoid sitting cross legged. And have calcium rich foods.
It's okay to experience this as it can be due to the weight gain.

Sanha

I do regular walks and yoga since 4th month. have had a weight gain of 5kg in 5months. I am also on calcium, I jus want to know inspite of doing all this is this pain normal? I find sleeping on sides very difficult as I am unable to bend the knee. I don't know what to do.

Dr.Srujana Kona( PT)

It looks like chondromalacia patella. It is common during pregnancy. Please include some knee strengthening exercises in your routone. For example..Sit or lie down with knees straight, place a small towel roll under/ beneath your knee.Try to press on to the towel by tightening the knee without lifting the heel .Hold for few seconds (10) n relax.Repeat for 10 times on each leg. This will strengthen ur muscles around knee joint. Slowly u will feel better.. all the best

Hi... Writing here for the first time.. I am 3 months pregnant and having pain in my right leg near the thigh joint and also under my hip is it normal or do I need to do something about it???

Sanha

with my experience I have understood that aches n pains are considered normal in pregnancy. I too had hip pain in first trimester. i was diagnosed wit vitamin d deficiency which was extremely low. my pains subsided after I started with vit d injections/medicines. incase u haven't pls get urs checked too as 80% Indians have v low levels.

Sanha

Dr riddhi & Dr Srujana need ur advice again
since my knee caps started hurtin I stopped doin yoga since 3 days n realised the pain slowly started reducing.. today I did yoga again and realised that 95% of the exercises require me to bend my knees in some form.. do url think that yoga could actually be the reason for this pain?? I have been doing 6 times a week yoga since 2 months

sanha. i have condromalacia patella. your signs are completely falling under this category.
completely avoid stairs. no squating or sitting with knees folded or bent. if u wish to do yoga sit on a chair n do it. no exercises which make you bend knees.
walk if u can. no brisk walking. start knee strengthening exercises if u know any physiotherapist. these are very simple and can be done while u lie on the bed. is your knee making crackling sound as well? and is your patella easily moving when u hold and move it?
