Q:

Hi my baby is 14 days old and I am unable to breast feed at all due to shorter nipples. Baby is adjusted to formula feed. I am trying it but baby refuses it and sucks for few seconds only. When I try to express milk I just get 5ml. Soo disappointed with this not able to be happy at all. Please help

Keep expressing milk and give baby through spoon. Meanwhile try baby to give your milk when they are in sleep. Once baby start latching, things will settle. There is nothing called shorter nipple. For some it won't be prominent... you have to give areola inside mouth.. initially it will be tricky and difficult.. once baby start sucking.. you feel nipples are in form.

hi spoorthy, first of all breathe and let the stress melt away... its not going to help you at all in this situation. so how are you breastfeeding baby? try like this - hold your forefinger and middle finger in scissor form with palm turned inwards and pull out more, the area around the nipple as well and try to give in baby's mouth. another way is to hold your hand in c form and hold the breast and give in baby's mouth. give not just the nipple but also more part, only then baby will be able to latch.. it takes a bit of practise and initially baby may cry, but you will be able to get it right. have patience and courage dear... all the best! 😊

I had same problem ... I was suggested nipple shields by the doctor... it really helped... I use to sterilise them after every feed... but baby was taking bf with that

Express frequently as this will help increase Stimulation and hence increase the supply. Be positive as low stress means increase in milk supply. Avoid the use of the bottle completely as this encourages baby to not suckle at the breast. The bottle is easier and they give up faster. Regular pumping will also help to form your nipples.

Dr. Mugdha Joshi

Baby needs to latch on the breast and not on the nipple. So work on positioning and latching your baby. The lower part of the aereola (black portion around the nipple) should go in more rather than just the nipple. Meanwhile do use a good quality breast pump to express breast milk to maintain supply. Using breast pump also help protruding the nipple out.
