A Drink to Keep You Hydrated - Watermelon Mojito
Watermelon is the perfect fruit when it comes to keeping you hydrated. The fruit is loved for its water content and mild sweetness. Rich in antioxidants and nutrients, a bowl of watermelon or a glass of watermelon juice is sure to quench your thirst at all times in tropical climes!
Watermelons have a very modest flavour that blend well with any given ingredient making it the preferred fruit to prepare an array of drinks. Here, I am sharing a recipe for Watermelon Mojito - non-alcoholic of’ course - which is a wonderful concoction of watermelon, mint and lemon.
A Watermelon Mojito looks lovely with its ruby hue and contrast colours of lemon slices and mint leaves. The drink is my favourite. It is just perfect to be served at parties because it is super simple to make, yet it’s high on flavours and chic to look at. It is a soda based mocktail which should ideally be prepared close to serving time. Try and use fresh ingredients as opposed to canned or frozen ones for the best blend of flavours.
So, go ahead and grab a watermelon and make a pitcher full of this lovely drink for family and friends right away!
Makes 2 glasses
- 2 cups fresh watermelon pieces
- 3 teaspoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- ¼ th cup fresh mint leaves (phudina)
- 200 – 250ml lemon flavoured soda
- Ice cubes
- Few lime slices
- Mint sprig, for garnish
Step 1: Chop watermelon into very small cubes. Remove as many seeds as possible.
Step 2: Put the watermelon cubes, sugar and lemon juice in a blender jar of a mixer/ grinder and blend to a smooth puree.
Step 3: Strain the puree through a sieve. Keep the strained juice in freezer till you prepare other ingredients.
Step 4: Pound the fresh mint leaves in a mortar and pestle.
Step 5: Start building the Watermelon Mojito by taking 2 serving glasses. Equally divide the crushed mint leaves between them and place a slice of lime, in each glass.
Step 6: Put few ice cubes in the glasses and then equally pour the watermelon puree in each of the glass.
Step 7: Top the drink with the lemon flavoured soda. Garnish the glass rim with a slice of lemon and mint sprigs. Serve immediately.
- If you cannot get hold of lemon flavoured soda, then you can use regular club soda to make the drink. At the same time, double the quantity of lemon juice and sugar to balance out the flavour.
- If you would like to make a soda free version of this drink then replace the lemon flavoured soda with chilled water. Increase lemon juice and sugar quantity by 1 teaspoon each.
PS: The soda version is not recommended for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and young children.
