In our social context, vagina is probably the most underrated organ in women! No one ever tells you how that area feels, how we should take care of it and when should we be worried about it!

During pregnancy and childbirth, the vagina assumes high stature! It is the gateway to many kinds of discharges –  some healthy, some unhealthy, but all equally embarrassing!

Here’s a lowdown on what your vaginal discharges might be telling you:

1. White discharge

Various hormonal changes occur during pregnancy. A thick mucus plug is generally present in the cervix during the initial days of pregnancy. As the cervical canal starts dilating with the progression of pregnancy, this plug gets pushed out in the form of slimy white vaginal discharge.

  • A normal vaginal discharge of pregnancy is generally thin, milky white, and does not have any foul odor.
  • Occasionally, discharge could be blood stained, pink colored or brownish, or there might be slight bleeding in the form of spots.
  • Do not panic if you observe spotting in the early days of pregnancy. Spotting usually occurs when the fertilized egg gets implanted in the uterus. It stops by itself in 1-2 days.

2. Inflammation and infections

  • Bacterial, or fungal infections of vagina alter the discharge. It may result in an offensive greenish or yellowish colored discharge and is commonly associated with itching and burning while urination. The discharge may become lumpy and there may be redness and swelling in the vagina.
  • Vaginitis and candidiasis are the most common causes of altered vaginal discharge during pregnancy and need immediate medical attention.

3. Smell, Gas and Heaviness

  • An unexpected but a common symptom of pregnancy is the sensation of passing gas through the vagina. The pressure of the weight of the growing baby on the uterus is the most probable reason for vaginal farting.
  • Apart from this, you are likely to experience change in smell of the discharge. This is because the environment in the vagina starts getting acidic with the progression of pregnancy.
  • As there is increase in the blood supply in the region, you might also experience heaviness or fullness in the vagina.

These symptoms are all normal and do not need any medical intervention.

Your vagina needs your love! During labour, your vagina will give way to your darling baby!
