It’s that time of the year where the admission process for the next academic session begin and parents are on the lookout  for the best school for their children. Selecting the right school can be a daunting task so here are few pointers that parents can consider while selecting the school for their child.

1- Which Board Do You Prefer

The first pointer is selecting the board according to your choice. There is ICSE, CBSE, IB, State board etc. Once you are clear which board to choose then you can make a list of schools which offer that board and narrow down your search.

2- Proximity from your house

Another important factor to consider while selecting the school is the distance from your place. Normally a distance of anywhere between 5-8 kms is ok(if it’s less even better) and anything more than that would mean more travel time for your child.

3- Safety Measures

It’s important to know what kind of safety measures the school follow as we are actually entrusting our kids lives to them. Whether there are CCTVs in the school premises and GPS tracking in the buses is also to be considered.

4- Communication System

It is very important that the school has a transparent communication system where parents can openly discuss about issues or give suggestions.

5- Student-Teacher Ratio

Another criteria to be considered is the student teacher ratio. A higher ratio would mean less individual attention given to each student. So, opt for a school which has a less student is to teacher ratio.

6- Co-educational or not

It’s a personal choice to select between co-educational school or not. But it is definitely a pointer to consider while selecting the school for your child.

7- Pattern Followed

Does the school focus only on bookish knowledge or also encourages individuality and enhancing the skills through practical learning is also very important.

8- Academics and Extracurricular activities

It’s better to select a school which has a right mix of academics and extracurricular activities as both are important for overall development. A school focused solely on academics would mean the child will not have time to do anything else and a school which focuses more on extracurricular activities would mean a lot of efforts needs to be taken by the parents for studies.

9- School culture

Does the school follow a holistic approach and have a sound teaching philosophy which matches with your own values and ideologies is also a pointer to be considered.

10- Financial Considerations

One also needs to consider the cost of admission like admission fees, annual fees school fees, transport  and other miscellaneous expenses which might crop up at anytime as it’s not a onetime investment but a recurring one so you need to really plan your finances well before selecting the school.

These are the points I have considered while selecting the right school for my daughter. Also, in my journey of finding a good school, I have realized that there is no school which matches all these criteria. So, choose a school which covers a majority of these points as there is no such thing as a perfect school. We need to find the correct match based on our most preferred points and decide accordingly.

I really hope you find these pointers helpful in selecting the school for your child.

Do let me know your comments on the same and whether there is anything else that you considered but is not mentioned here so that others can benefit too.
