A toothache can be a real nightmare  and nearly all of us have experienced it at some point in our lives; most often as kids.

Causes of toothache

Although this unbearable pain may seem to spring up overnight, the underlying cause has often been simmering for quite some time. The most common reasons for toothache include tooth decay, gum inflammation, damaged dental fillings, teeth grinding, incorrect brushing and flossing, tooth sensitivity, misaligned wisdom teeth, dental abscess, and inflammation of sinus. Dental visits for toothache may end up in elaborate treatments such as root canals, which require multiple visits and are not pocket friendly.

Ayurveda and Toothache

The ancient Indian system of Ayurveda can provide cheaper and effective alternative measures.

Cloves: These are one of the most commonly available spices and  are abundantly used in Indian cuisine. However, not all individuals using this ingredient are completed aware of its benefits apart from the excellent flavour it lends to food. Research shows cloves have analgesic properties. Studies conducted on the effects of clove and clove extracts show that it has an excellent effect on toothache. You can press a whole clove on the aching teeth for some relief. Alternatively, you can also apply edible clove oil to the affected area and let it stay.

Triphala: This is a very potent Ayurvedic mixture. It contains Emblica officinalis, Terminalia chebula, and Terminalia belerica in equal parts. It is shown to have anti-caries, antioxidant, anti-collagenase, and anti-microbial activities. Triphala should be used for toothache as it has shown anti-bacterial activity against the bacteria present in mouth. Triphala powder should be mixed in a glass of warm and used to gargle your mouth regularly.

Turmeric: This is another common ingredient used abundantly  in Indian cuisine. The use of this spice has been highlighted since years and proven with the help of modern research. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, liver protective, immunostimulant, antiseptic, and antimutagenic properties and is called a ‘wonder herb’. These properties are useful when it comes to treating oral problems like toothache as turmeric can eliminate pain and swelling. To reap its benefits, you can massage your aching tooth with a pinchful of roasted or ground turmeric dabbed over and around the aching tooth. You can gargle it off in 5 minutes.

All the above remedies are easy on the pocket and devoid of any side-effects. Use them the next time you experience toothache or your little one is complaining of the same and see instant effects.
