Meet Khyati Rupani, a mom who understands health and diet, helps solve the dilemma of what to eat, what not to eat and when to eat with her structured customized Diet plans. A dietitian by profession, she now runs successfully her biz – Balance Nutrition. Being a Mum, she knows how to balance her time between work, home and her daughter Trissha. Here she shares her story of being a Mommy and entrepreneur…

1. My Mom Quotient

I am a liberal mother, Trissha is never forced to do anything.. We always discuss things and then she is given a choice. I just explain things to her and make sure she is guided well. We have our differences (yes! She’s 5) but at the end of the day we reason things out.

The more I would ask her to do something I thought was the best, in a not so friendly manner… the more she would end up going against it. The more I forced, the lesser it worked. She got cranky, irritable and I upset.

So thumb rule of being a happy parent is to manage that fine line of being firm and working towards making the child more confident and independent by being there. There are some things that are non-negotiable, our reading time, food habits and physical activity time… rest we take it as it comes.

Being an e commerce business, we have to work 24 hours. I am at present concentrating on building the core of the business and improvising the services to a class level. So I am spending more than 8 hours a day thinking or working on the website.

Weekends we tend to take it a bit slow. I spend 1 hour on my health and fitness every day. Being an active mother of a maidless child takes 4 hours of my day. So when it comes to my child and home, there is a 3 to 4 hour a day slot reserved come what may. Nights are about reading.

2. My Mom Inc. Story

From late school days I was quite attracted to food & nutrition and medicine both, becoming a dietitian was a natural choice for me, after graduation as I started practicing giving diets the joy of seeing the effect it had on people was un paralleled, I went deep into it I consulted gyms to set up cafes, consulted corporate for menu planning, I used my nutrition and dietary knowledge in every possible way from diet planning to recipe menu planning.

After having a lovely baby, I resigned from the post of chief dietitian at Lilavati hospital and was consulting a few corporate. The executives there were extremely busy to follow a text book diet chart and had many health disorders. It got me thinking that the traditional diet charts shall have to be modified and a more practical approach shall have to be used.

For me the passion led to everything else and business just grew out of it, the current online business again took shape when I shut my clinic due to my baby and the passion and love for the profession led me to explore doing it online thru emails. Our services include:

1. DIETS ON EMAIL:

No one had the time to come for a consultation, hence began the emailing of the nutritional assessment sheet and preparing diets and emailing them. All details and recipes needed to be attached too

2. RESTAURANT AND ALCOHOL GUIDE:

No executive was ready to skip a board lunch meet hence I had to give options from the things available. The restaurant guide today has 36 cuisines from chaat to fine dining and can be used even when travelling globally

3. TRAVEL/AIRPORT and HOLIDAY GUIDE:

On similar lines I made a food guide for frequent travelers and those on a holiday.

So the entire base of balance nutrition started developing and to my surprise, I had my 1st NRI client in JAN 2014!! She had read my updates on Facebook page. This is how in August came.

Today balance nutrition is serving 1000 clients across 22 countries, and a base of 6000 people worldwide actively engaging with us through various social media. We now have a full-fledged office with 6 dietitians 2 programmers, accountant admin and still adding, we have been featured in women’s health, Sheroes, Apollo life, O Womaniya and soon to be featured on Headlines Today.

Balance nutrition is now becoming a complete weight loss health management company providing range of programs & services online, we are now beginning partnerships with schools for child nutrition and with corporate for executive fitness. We have big plans to turn it into the best & most respected player in the field of weight loss and health management in India

3. Who inspired/ supported me:

Very few women are blessed with a family like mine. I have never had to keep a maid for my little baby. Whether it is my mom, husband, sisters or my brother in law…all have helped me in bringing up Trissha by always being ready to baby sit depending on their work schedules. So I was never worried about her being with a maid or alone.

My husband has been my biggest support as he is the only one who recognized my talent and pushed me to start an active career after the baby. Whether it is a work issue or a domestic issue, he is always around despite having a busy job himself.

4. Advice/tips:

My biggest advice is find your passion and once you have found it do not leave it. Today due to balance nutrition am growing as a person, which in turn benefits my child and my family, yes the work life balance is always there and must be maintained.

Do not under estimate yourself and don’t let your domestic duties be an excuse for not being an entrepreneur. They are your strength. Being a working woman makes me a much better wife and mom. I am happy and hence my home is happier.
