The Book List For 2 Year Olds

My journey into the world of children’s books started when  Vansh was around 6 months old. It was a time when I was a complete novice in this area and ended up buying a lot of books some of which he loved and some of which are still lying here with me in mint condition.

When he was around 2 years old he started enjoying books a lot and we had a bedtime routine of reading around 2-3 books before lights out. At that age, he enjoyed books which had a simple storyline with attractive pictures. He also enjoyed rhymes and rhyme in prose. I will list down a few books here which have worked well for us and are great buys for any 2-year-old’s library.

1.Om Kidz board books minibus series..

The titles include Animals, Birds, Vehicles, Gods and Goddesses. These books  have about 1 line of text and the rest of the page is an illustration.

2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar – By Eric Carle

The well appreciated classic gently takes a child through the days of the week, numbers, the life cycle of a butterfly and so many fruits and food items. It has been a super hit with my son till he was almost 4. The book has a see through hole in each page to follow the little butterfly into the next page, making it very attractive for little ones.

3. Guess how much I love you – By Anita Jeram

As Mumma rabbit puts her little one to bed, the little one keeps on claiming that his love for his mom is much more than her love for him. A perfect bedtime story for little ones.

4. Gajapati Kulapati series – By Ashok Rajagopalan

Gajapati Kulapati is a series of 3 books by Tulika Publishers of the story of a gentle elephant who is much loved in his village. The storylines are very simple with catchy illustrations by Ashok Rajagopalan. The series is a set of 3 books.(Gajapati Kulapati, Gajapati Kulapati Kalabaloosh, Gajapati Kulapati Gurrorbroom.)

5. Let’s Go!

A perfect counting book for vehicle lovers.

6. Thumb Thumb books 

These books cover various topics and are wonderfully illustrated using thumbprints – the illustrations are a great inspiration, in our household, for artwork as well.

7. Panda Bear Panda Bear what do you see, – By Eric Carle

Brown Bear Brown Bear what do you see  By Eric Carle

Polar Bear Polar Bear what do you hear –By Eric Carle

This series has animals and birds illustrated in bright colours. There is a question and response rhyming – repetitive text which allows little ones to participate in the book reading.

There are also many other titles by Eric Carle which are great to own.

8. The Tiny Seed – By Eric Carle

Which talks about the lifecycle of a plant.

9. Rooster’s Off to See the World – By Eric Carle

A set of animals keep joining the Rooster on a journey to see the world. The book is a great introduction to numbers.

10. The mixed up Chameleon – By Eric Carle

A chameleon thinks it is no fun to be a chameleon and tries to be other animals, ultimately coming to the conclusion that he is best as a chameleon.

11. Spot Series by Eric Hill

The Spot series is a set of books on Spot the puppy’s experiences at various events (like birthday party, easter egg hunt etc) and visits to common places (like a farm, school, park). The books have great illustrations and text in a huge font (with about a line on a page) making it easy to follow and fun for the child.

There are many such series available like – Pepper, Bruno etc which are on similar lines and also great picks.

12. Dr Seuss – Blue Back Books

These books are silly with imaginary creatures written with rhyming, repetitive text. It is not always that a child takes to this series but nevertheless they are worth introducing.

A few books to start off this series could be

Mr Brown can Moo Can You – This fun book is all about noises from animal sounds to horse feet sounds and also the “supposed” sound of a goldfish kiss. Amazing humour if you and your child enjoy it!

The Foot Book – Once again a rhyming book with lots of opposites. Slow feet / Quick feet, Wet foot / dry foot. The book has one or two lines a page along with illustrations making it great for little ones.
