Here’s what to do if your Infant has runny nose and cold?

Remedy 1

Heat about 1 cup good quality mustard oil in a pan. When hot, add 1 teaspoon Hing, 2 teaspoons each of ajwain and methi dana and 8-10 cloves of garlic. Let the spices burn on simmer. Sieve the mix, when it cools down a little. You can store this oil in a bottle for even a month. Whenever needed, apply this oil after warming it on the baby’s chest, ribs, back and feet and ensure baby is warm after that for at least half an hour. This works really well in winter season.

Remedy 2

Heat about 3-4 teaspoon of ajwain and 6-7 lavang (laung) on a griddle (tawa) while stirring it so that it doesn’t burn. When it turns down a little cool, put it in a handkerchief and make a potli out of it. When it is bearably hot, press it on baby’s chest like doing fomenting with hot water bag(sikai). This gives relief from congestion.

Remedy 3

When a baby is suffering with severe cold symptoms and is unable to breathe and sleep, apply balm on a handkerchief or even eucalyptus oil. Try and make baby sleep such that the head is a little elevated (using pillow or towel) and keep this handkerchief near the baby. The fumes will ease breathing. If the baby is older like more than 6 months you can apply on upper clothes of the baby so that baby can breathe. Also one trick is to apply under baby’s feet and make them wear socks. This takes away cold.

For older kids, things like giving steam, giving warm haldi and salt water , kaadha helps. Using humidifier in room also gives relief.

Hope these tricks help mothers in need.
