In a chat with the founder of Kookaburra Learning Centre, we learnt more about the school and its philosophy.

1. Tell us more about yourself

I am Tejal Mehta, a neuroscientist and the founder of Kookaburra learning centre. Kookaburra has been my sole area of interest for the last 15 years, since the school was founded.

2. Which unique method of teaching does your school use?

Our school is very different; the method of teaching used here has been developed by me. Each child is given special attention and each child has her own curriculum. We believe that no two children are the same and hence each child has her own curriculum. We want each child to develop in their own way and we believe that, that is possible only if each one receives special treatment.

3. What value does the school try to inculcate in the child? What is your philosophy?

We want the child to learn to learn. We nurture our children so that they can grow up and face life, we want an all-round development of the children.

4. A day in the life of a student from your school:

Like I have said before, each child is given his/her own curriculum and no two curricula are the same. Special attention and treatment is given to each child. There are children from the age of 9 months to 9 years, some learn to walk here. Hence describing a normal day in our school would be very difficult because then I would have to mention the curriculum of all our students.

5. Where do most of your students graduate to?

Most of our students go to ICSE, IGCSE, IB board schools. Previously our students have gone to schools like Dhirubhai Ambani, Oberoi, Jamna Bai and JBCN.

6. What is the most rewarding part about being the founder of a Preschool?

I love children; the experience of sitting with them in the class is absolutely delightful. I know each and every one of my students, right from 2000. I believe that they are all my own children. The feeling is satisfying and fulfilling. It is my passion, and that is the best part. There really is no other way of describing it.

7. What are the school timings like?

The school timings are diverse and flexible. They are according to the age groups and needs of the children.

8. What is the Teacher Student ratio?

The teacher student ratio is usually 3:1, but if we notice that a particular class needs more attention, more teachers are assigned to that class.

9. Do you provide any transportation facility?

Most of our students stay nearby and we also have another school in Lokhandwala. But mostly we believe that bringing children to school is a very big responsibility and they would need one on one attention. And hence we don’t provide any transportation facility.

10. Why do people choose Kookaburra?

When we asked Mrs Tejal Mehta this question, she said it would be best for parents to answer. When we asked the parents why they chose Kookaburra over other preschools, everybody had the same answer, “They care for our babies and children more than we do. The way they handle our kids is something even we couldn’t do. We just love Kookaburra!” A mother who has both of her children studying in Kookaburra said, “It’s great to see them read at the age of 3 without any pressure. The only time they create a fuss in the morning is when there is a holiday and they don’t get to go to school. They love their teachers, and so do we! A few parents also mentioned that celebrities like Shilpa Shetty and Aishwarya Rai Bachhan have their kids studying in Kookaburra and they are all treated the same
