6 Safe Ayurvedic Remedies For Constipation During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a phase you will have fond memories of your entire life. Those cravings, unexplained mood swings, or morning sickness are a part and parcel of being pregnant but the “fruit of labour” (pun intended!) is sweet indeed.
There is one hurdle many women face during this period and that is constipation. This normally happens as a result of the many changes the body goes through during pregnancy. When your body feels a stress in eliminating waste substances from the body, it means you are constipated.
What Causes Constipation During Pregnancy?
Hormonal changes can be attributed to constipation in this phase of a woman’s life. An increase in the progesterone hormone can result in relaxing the muscles in your body, including those in the intestines. When the intestinal muscles become relaxed, digestion becomes sluggish and this results in constipation.
If you are on iron supplements, which your doctor would want you to be, you can feel constipated. Iron supplements tend to slow down digestion and are known to stick to undigested substances in the body. Besides, the pressure caused by the growing baby in the womb can also cause constipation in some pregnant women.
Let’s take a look at some of the ayurvedic remedies for constipation during pregnancy.
Ayurvedic Remedies for Constipation
1. Psyllium Husk (Ispaghula)
Commonly known as Sat Isabgol and easily available over the counter, Psyllium Husk is a tried-and-tested remedy for constipation. It works best when you take 1 tsp of this with a glass of warm milk.
Known to aid in cleaning the bowels, this tonic is usually taken in a dosage of 10 ml with equal quantity of water after meals.
3. Triphala Churna
Triphala is a mixture of three fruits – amla, haritaki, and vibhitaki. Take it with honey twice a day or take 5 to 10 gm with hot water daily at bedtime.
This Ayurvedic remedy helps in combating digestive troubles of the acute or chronic kind and improves overall health and wellbeing. The normal dosage for this formulation is one-fifth of a gram and you can take a dose twice or thrice daily after meals with water or buttermilk.
5. Trivrut Lehya
Acknowledged as a harmless laxative, this lumpy medicine with jam-like consistency alleviates constipation when used on a regular basis. Normally, the dosage administered is 6 to 12 grams and it is to be taken before bedtime with hot water.
6. Gandhak Vati
A tablet of Gandhak Vati with hot water after meals could also help in ending constipation woes.
Ayurveda is an ancient system of treating illness and is known to have its roots in the Vedas. Apart from these formulations, it also proposes several herbal cures that can promote bowel movement. Ingestion of coconut oil is known to relieve constipation. Bael fruit is an Ayurvedic medicine that helps in expelling waste from the body. Likewise, castor oil, chicory, haritak, and rhubarb are all natural remedies for sluggish bowels.
Consult a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner
Here’s a quick word of caution to all you pregnant moms. Please do not attempt to take any of the above-mentioned remedies on your own without consulting an Ayurvedic doctor. A certified practitioner is the best person to judge the intensity of your problem and prescribe doses of safe laxatives accordingly.
Pregnancy is a beautiful phase in your life and doing the right things is important to make it comfortable and safe for both, you and your baby. Stay happy and glowing for the rest of your pregnancy :)
