Food allergies in kids are something that parents are completely unaware of. Food allergies only get detected once the body reacts to them and shows symptoms.

These symptoms generally show up within a few mins to an hour after eating that particular food. Food allergies normally affect the respiratory system (breathing) and the digestive system. Few food allergies also tend to affect the heart.

Parents need to pay attention to these signs even if they are mild as it’s a way to know what food allergy does your kid has.

Some common food allergy symptoms seen in kids include cough, congestion, nausea, runny nose, sneezing, itching (around the ears or mouth), stomach pain, difficulty in breathing, eczema (itchy, red rash), hives on the skin (itchy, red bumps), swollen lips, face or tongue, wheezing and vomiting.

All these symptoms are a result of a hyperactive immune system that produces antibodies against the substances or food.

5 common food allergies found in kids include:

  • Nuts (peanut, walnut, pistachios, cashews)
  • Egg
  • Cow’s milk
  • Soy
  • Wheat

Besides these, a few kids tend to have allergic reactions to seafoods like shrimps, lobsters, fish, and shellfish.

In case of serious allergies, the kids might show symptoms like chest pain, weakened pulse, dizziness, fainting, turning blue, severe swelling on the lips, tongue, and throat, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in swallowing, or confusion.

These are alarming signs and need immediate doctor attention.
