Parents love their babies and want to make sure that they have hefty, healthy meals, round the clock. In an attempt to make your little one healthy and chubby, you might actually be over-feeding them. Just as anything too less is not good, too much of anything is not good either.

You must give your little ones a balanced diet and make sure that they do not face any issues because of excessive consumption of food that they do not require. If you are not sure about what to feed them, you can consult a paediatrician who will guide you correctly.

These are some signs that you are overfeeding your baby:

1. Milk regurgitation.

A large part of our baby’s diet is composed of liquids and mostly milk. It is imperative for their body to retain these liquid components for better nutrition and facilitation of growth. Regurgitation is an almost natural phenomenon and occurs once in awhile, but you need to start taking notice if it happening too many times. After feeding your baby, hold them upright, massage their backs and make them burp. Even after doing this if your baby is not able to hold it in, it is a clear sign of them being over-fed.

2. Eight or more heavily wet nappies a day.

As mentioned earlier, the major part of your baby’s diet is liquid based. Your baby needs to retain liquids and if it is all going out of their body in the way of urine, you are probably over-feeding them. If you notice that your little one requires more than the average number of diapers a day, you need to evaluate the patterns in which you feed them.

3. Irritability.

If your baby’s stomach is always too full, they will have difficulty in breathing and sleeping. This will make them irritable and in turn prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. Breathlessness is not a good thing to happen to children who do not have completely developed physical and mental faculties. So if your baby is irritable and it is not because of any disease or hunger, you might want to consider this, as one of the causes.

4. Large belching.

Belching is the sound caused when wind gushes out of the stomach through the mouth. Overfeeding may leave their food pipe blocked to more than the extent necessary which will, in turn, cause their windpipe to behave cautiously. This is what causes the sound and it can be extremely loud at times. This, at times, could also be caused by a cough, but you must confirm the same with your doctor.

5. Baby gains more than average weight.

It is good for your little one to be healthy and plump, but at the same time, obesity is not good and can cause any number of health issues. A regular visit to your paediatrician will help you understand the expected range of weights for your baby. If your little one surpasses this weight, you must give the matter some wise thought.
