Mouth ulcers or canker sores are small white patches seen on the gums, inner side of the lips, or on the tongue. These ulcers are generally quite discomforting and painful. In kids, at times they may also lead to loss of appetite, irritability and cranky behaviour.

Mouth ulcers could be due to several reasons but a few common ones include:

Deficiencies

Poor diet leading to deficiency of important vitamins and nutrients may lead to mouth ulcers. Vitamin B12, folic acid, zinc, and iron deficiency are seen to be linked with mouth ulcers.

Injuries

Accidental biting, burns, and constant friction due to braces can also lead to mouth ulcers.

Oral thrush

Oral thrush is a fungal infection caused in and around the kid’s mouth which appears as white patches that can also contribute to ulcers.

Viral infection

Sore throat and hand, foot, and mouth disease in kids are also known to contribute to mouth ulcers.

Certain chemicals

Toothpaste or mouth wash that contains sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can also lead to mouth ulcers or canker sores.

Pay attention to these factors and avoid them in order to prevent canker sores in kids and the discomfort caused by the same.
