The little human inside you is constantly exploring and moving as he changes his position and has hiccups, you feel like he’s kicking you.

You cannot feel all the movements but the most predominant one is the kicks. These baby movements are known as quickening, which is like a reassurance that your baby is healthy and doing well inside. Here are 6 facts about your baby’s kicks in the womb:

1.Response to changes in the environment

Babies kick when there are changes in the external environment. Sometimes the baby also stretches and moves inside the womb due to external factors like sudden loud sounds, the food the mother eats and other bodily motion. Kicking is normal and you shouldn’t be worried about it.

2. Lying on the left side will make your baby kick more often

This is because the fetus that is growing inside the womb receives a lot of blood supply. This helps in improving the baby’s movements and therefore makes the baby active.

3. Baby will kick more on a fuller stomach

Keeping your stomach full makes your baby happy as he receives a lot of nutrition from the meals you’ve been eating.

4. Fewer kicks could indicate that your fetus could be in danger

On an average, a healthy baby kicks 15-20 times a day. Reduced number of kicks could be because of the lack of oxygen supply to the fetus. A detailed ultrasound is required to understand the drop in the kicking frequency. Sometimes a solid reason can be incurred through the scans and sometimes it will require the baby to be delivered on an immediate basis.

5. Fewer kicks after 36th week

Just because your due date is closing in, doesn’t mean that the baby is going to stop kicking. The frequency of kicking is less because the baby has grown in size. You’ll be able to feel kicks only in one single place- under either one of your ribs. That’s because the baby is now almost in the head first position.

6. Counting the number of kicks

There is no fixed pattern that you should follow to keep a track of your baby’s movements. It will change as the baby develops inside the womb. So if the baby doesn’t kick so much, don’t freak out!
