Pregnancy brings about a change in mothers; not only physically, but also mentally. It takes a tremendous amount of will and effort to get through the entire process and come out unscathed. While it is necessary to provide the mother with all sorts of comfort devices, it is all the more essential to be there for them on an emotional level.

There are a lot of unexplored emotions that a mother goes through before and after pregnancy. After delivery, she has an increased responsibility, as an entire person’s life depends on her. This sudden change in lifestyle can sometimes cause postpartum depression or anxiety.

Here are 8 ways in which mothers can cope with their emotional health postpartum.

1. Yoga

Since it is advisable for mothers to not directly jump into the ‘exercise mode’, yoga can be a great alternative. The mother’s body is still in the recovery stage and most probably cannot handle the strain of heavy physical exercise. Yoga can be relaxing and is a flexible option. It not only helps with mental recovery but also alleviates aches and pains.

2. Sleep

Sleep is one of the most sought after things post delivery. Adjusting to your baby’s sleeping patterns and fitting sleep into the erratic schedule can be difficult for a mother. In such conditions, getting as much sleep as possible is essential for the mother’s mental as well as physical recovery.

3. Stay connected

If you’re feeling blue, you might want to curl up in bed, but isolation can make your symptoms worse. So, do something fun with your partner, call up a friend for coffee, or let other people know how you’re feeling.

4. Ask for help and support

If you feel that you are not able to cope with postpartum emotional issues and are on the edge of a mental breakdown, ask for help. Talk to your partner about it and seek professional help, if necessary. Keeping your feelings to yourself and not being open is only going to cause you more pain.

5. Medication

Although mothers would not like to take additional medication for depression or anxiety, it might be a good alternative. It will help you recover faster than expected.

6. Go for a walk

Buy a stroller and go for a walk with your baby. Not only will this give you an opportunity to show off your little one, but it will also help you rejuvenate and get some fresh air. Going for a walk may seem like a trivial exercise, but it makes a huge change in your mental patterns.

7. Pamper yourself

You have gone through a lot and deserve to be treated. Although this may not be possible every other day, you can take out some time and go get yourself a massage, go for a date with your partner or catch a movie. We’re sure it won’t be difficult to ask someone, especially a family member, to babysit for a couple hours.

8. Eat healthily and relax

Having a balanced diet is essential. Your body goes through a lot of changes and hence it is necessary for you to make sure that you get all the required nutrients. More often than not, mothers stress about trivial matters and face depression or anxiety. It is important to know that everything falls in its place and things get alright.
