Babies start teething around the age of 6 months. Teething is a process of eruption of teeth from the gums. The teeth to appear first are lower central incisors (the front teeth at the bottom), followed by upper central incisors (the front teeth on the upper side).

Chewing on toys/objects, excessive drooling, soreness of gums, and a slight increase in body temperature are the three most common signs of teething. The baby tends to get cranky, irritated, and cry often during the teething period. They also tend to have a loss of appetite due to the soreness and pain in the gums.

To treat this discomfort:

  • Rub the baby’s gums gently with your figure, wet gauze, or a soft cloth.
  • Soothe your baby’s sore gums with a cold feeding bottle, cold spoon, or a cold nipple.
  • Another way to soothe your baby’s gums is by giving them homemade popsicles (made with natural fruits) or momsicles (made with fruits and breastmilk) to suck on.
  • Feed easy-to-chew foods to your baby to reduce gum irritation.
  • For babies, who get very cranky with teething pain, use pain relief medications or oil prescribed by your expert.
