Premature delivery is when the childbirth takes place earlier than 3 weeks from the expected date of delivery. Several health-related, lifestyle and genetic factors contribute to preterm labor leading to premature childbirth. For healthy growth, the fetus must stay in the mother’s womb for a complete 37-38 weeks period.
Some extra care taken before and during the pregnancy can prevent preterm labor. Take prenatal care sessions and understand the causes of premature delivery. This can help plan things better during pregnancy.

Go for prenatal yoga sessions. Prenatal yoga can help relax your mental state, improve blood circulation, regulate oxygen levels and help manage aches and pains during pregnancy. On the other hand, Pilates, if recommended by your Gynecologist and safe for you in your current condition, helps core and muscle strengthening (especially the pelvic region), regulates blood and oxygen supply in the body and supports relaxation of joints.

Stay protected from flu. Vaccinate yourself against influenza as per the doctor’s recommendation.

Stay away from tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption or any drug abuse.

Stay physically active and keep a check on your weight. Going for daily walks and staying physically active supports healthy blood and oxygen supply, cardiovascular health, and prevents excess weight gain. Obesity during pregnancy is linked to two major health conditions, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. Maintaining your weight during pregnancy helps you avoid such health complications and in turn prevents the need for a premature delivery due to complications in pregnancy.

Maintain a healthy diet and keep yourself well hydrated during the day. Good hydration prevents urine infections which could be the cause of preterm labor.

Maintain good hygiene to prevent any infections and also maintain oral hygiene.

Do not skip your daily dose of iron with folic acid, as it plays an important role in maintaining the mother’s health and preventing anemia and reducing the risk of premature childbirth.
