Skin rashes in newborns are very common. Few of the rashes heal by themselves in a couple of days or a week, but few of them need extra care and medications. Few of the rashes also cause fever or itching.

A few of the common rashes seen in newborns include:

Eczema

Eczema is characterized by itchy, red patches appearing on the arms, elbows, legs, and backside of the knee. This type of skin rash does not heal very fast. It generally takes 3-4 weeks of special care and medicated creams for the rashes to completely heal.

Heat rashes

Heat rashes appear as red bumps on the areas that are exposed to sweat and get overheated. Heat rashes commonly appear on the neck, armpits, diaper areas, and inner thighs. These rashes heal faster with some common home care that keeps the infected area dry, clean and does not allow it to overheat.

Cradle cap

Cradle caps are a greasy, yellowish crust appearing on the baby’s scalp. Often these crusts are accompanied by red rashes that appear on the face, armpits, and behind the ears. The cradle cap takes longer to heal, and it needs medication-based treatment.

Erythema Toxicum

Erythema Toxicum is a type of rash seen in newborns within a few hours of birth. They appear in the form of red patches with yellow or white pimples. These patches can appear anywhere on the body except the sole. These rashes require medication, and they may disappear within 3-4 weeks with routine home care.

Contact rashes

Contact rashes are a kind of allergic reaction caused by things or substances that come in touch with the newborns. These rashes are very similar to heat rashes. They typically develop within a few hours of contact with the things that the baby is allergic to. They are characterized by red and scaly texture on the skin. These rashes heal with routine home care, but in a few severe cases, medicated treatment might be needed.

Besides these 5 common rashes, there are many other types of rashes seen in newborns like; fungal rash, slapped cheek disease, ringworm, yeast infection, etc.

Be it medication or homecare-based techniques to treat the rashes, always consult your doctor when you see any signs of developing rashes on your newborn.
