There’s no denying that homemakers are the silent warriors of society. A homemaker works 24/7, and even though she is the crucial thread that holds society together, she seldom receives any recognition for her hard work. While society finds it difficult to accept the struggles of a homemaker, there are a few Bollywood movies that have beautifully represented homemakers, while drawing attention to their plight, triumphs, and overall lives.
If you relate to this narrative and want to explore movies that depict the lives of homemakers realistically, then read on. We have compiled a list of some of the best Bollywood movies that celebrate homemakers, while delivering powerful messages, and showing that a woman is capable of everything and anything.
Mrs. Undercover is an upcoming spy-comedy thriller, where Radhika Apte takes the role of an ordinary homemaker, with an extraordinary past. This much-awaited movie delves into the life of an undercover agent, who is recruited back to service after many years to arrest a serial killer. As the situation starts getting out of hand, the homemaker reactivates her spy skills to track down ‘Common man,’ who is the elusive killer murdering women who are strong and independent.
With a thrilling plot and power-packed dialogues, this film is an ode to homemakers and attempts to break age-old societal beliefs that homemakers have it easy, just because they stay at home.
This is another great movie about homemakers that shows how a woman with an unwavering spirit takes the plunge to map out a new journey for herself when no one really believes in her.
Sulu (played by Vidya Balan) is a regular Indian homemaker and mum, whose routine life completely changes when she gets an unexpected job offer as a night RJ. While her dream of having a career is frowned upon by everyone, including her husband and sisters, Sulu decides to pay zero heed to others’ opinions and takes charge to turn her life around.
Sulu is the ultimate inspiration for dreaming big, and proof that women can overcome all kinds of challenges that come their way.
This movie celebrates a simple homemaker and mum, who is ready to go to far lengths to give the best possible life to her child. Meeta (played by Saba Qamar) is a homemaker from a middle-class family.
Meeta’s only aspiration is to give her little one the life that she never got to experience. Hence, together with her partner, Raj (played by the late Irrfan Khan), Meeta decides to turn over her lifestyle to get her daughter admitted to one of the prestigious English schools in the city.
The Lunchbox (2013)
This movie depicts people’s lack of gratitude for homemakers despite her putting everything into showing her love for her partner. Ila (played by Nimrat Kaur) painstakingly cares for her husband, but he barely notices her or her small gestures of love, such as sending sweet notes with his lunchbox.
One day, the lunchbox meant for her husband gets mixed, and ends up with another man (played by the late Irrfan Khan). Due to the unexpected events, Ila and the man start writing notes to each other, and she finally sees a person who cares for her and appreciates her efforts.
What makes the ending of the film satisfactory is that Ila recognises her worth, and refuses to stay in a marriage where her partner doesn’t show any sign of gratefulness or acknowledge her efforts.
The late Sredevi’s performance as Shashi Godbole in English Vinglish sure left a deep impact on Indian cinema. The film’s depiction of how homemakers are often sidelined in India was a much-needed intervention for society.
However, despite all the struggles she went through, while constantly handling her husband’s judgments, and her daughter’s disrespectful behaviour, Shashi emerged as a clear winner in the end. And this perfectly mirrors the life of a homemaker, who has to fight through every situation and adapt to a million different things, yet her perseverance is what makes her successful.
These Bollywood movies perfectly depict the struggles of homemakers who selflessly work to care for their families, while putting their aspirations and dreams on the backseat.
Mrs. Undercover is the ideal example of how a homemaker is always worried about her family and has to think a million times before doing something for herself. So, do add this movie to your watchlist, and stream it on Zee5 from April 14.
