Taking care of a child is one of the greatest responsibilities, and when it comes to newborn babies, you are faced with a choice. Breastfeeding or milk bottle? And the difficulty of this decision is increased due to two important ‘facts’ that are thrown around all the time by mothers and medical practitioners. These two known statements are: a) Breastmilk is a lot safer, and a lot more nutritious for babies than any substitute.

b) Breastfeeding causes breasts to sag. These two facts are the perfect recipe for a mommy’s guilt. Though, don’t feel guilty. Hopefully, learning the reality of these claims can simplify these issues for you. Firstly, breastmilk is a lot safer, as it possesses a lot of necessary antibodies, and is easier to digest, and as a result, won’t make your baby gassy. Now, with regards to the second, here is where it gets a little problematic. Every woman is different, and naturally, for a particular type of women, the act of breastfeeding will have some detrimental impact (i.e. sagging of breasts), but that does not mean that this phenomenon is universal. So, there is no reason for you to worry. And if you genuinely believe that you belong in this category of women, and your doctor seconds that opinion, then giving your child formula does not greatly disadvantage the child. Yes, breast milk is more nutritious, but formula is the next best thing that you can give your child. sS mommies, enough of that guilt. Another thing that you prospective mommies need to understand is that sagging of breasts is actually a much deeper problem, and goes way beyond breastfeeding alone, and in fact has to do with pregnancy as a whole. During pregnancy, your cooper’s ligaments, (i.e. the bands attaching the breast to the muscles that provide support to the breasts) are taut, and are stretched across. However, over time, they lose their elasticity, and as a result, become loose. This leads to sagging breasts. Now while this is an inescapable biological fact, it does not mean that there is nothing that can be done to reverse this phenomenon. In fact, while the underlying cause may be an internal biological fact, there are several other factors that result in ‘saggy breasts’, so to speak. They range anywhere from a woman’s age to her habits to her diet. What can be done to stop breasts from sagging if you decide to go natural with your baby?

1. Ensure that you have good breastfeeding posture

Use nursing pillows in order to bring your baby’s mouth to your breast. Do not slouch or angle your body in an uncomfortable manner.

2. Eat well

Eating right can also prevent the sagging of breasts. Consuming food that is rich in complex carbs and healthy fats and proteins is very good for your connective tissue, and as a result, will go a long way in ensuring that your breasts do not sag. (Also foods which have high concentration of vitamins B and E help)

3. Wear supportive and comfortable bras

Wear bras that keep them perky, and while this will not help with size- and shape-related problems, a good bra that supports your breasts will ensure that no unnecessary stretching of your ligaments occurs.

4. Exercise well

Start with simple exercises such as walking or yoga, and be sure not to strain yourself. Losing too much weight as a result of working out will also cause sagging skin, and in that manner, it becomes counter-productive. Be careful, and it is wise to ask a dietician or your doctor about how to go about dieting for the simple reason that every woman is different, and coming out of a pregnancy and breastfeeding immediately after will naturally have effects on your body that only they will be aware of.

5. Massage

During showers with cold and hot water, massage your breasts, as they produce a desired reduction of sagging due to the hot water massage increasing blood circulation, and the cold water massage tightening the skin.
