Dealing With The Summer Heat During Pregnancy

With summer approaching, it becomes harder for everyone to bear with the heat, let alone for the women with baby bumps. When you’re pregnant, it often makes you feel hotter than usual. While this would be fine during winters, it only becomes suffocating during summers and is hard to handle.

Here are some suggestions to help you get more comfort during the summer.

1. Natural fabrics

Sweating is common during summer, but when you’re pregnant, sweating at night may become a problem. To rescue yourself from the ‘all-too-sweaty’ feel, you should go for natural fabrics. Try using a pillow made of feathers, rather than the synthetic ones. Also make sure to wear nightwear made of breathable cotton and linen.

2. Staying hydrated is a necessity

Doctors usually suggest maintaining our water intake to a proper level during summer, but it becomes more important when you’re pregnant.

Feeling hot? Drink ounces of water—iced water, which will not only help you in keeping your body hydrated, but also will cool your body down, effectively. If you don’t feel like drinking normal water, then try drinking it with a squeeze of lemon, or go for coconut water. However, remember to avoid sugary and caffeinated drinks like soft drinks and other beverages.

3. Those swollen feet and hands demand care

Summer heat can cause swelling of your hands and feet, so taking caring of them is very important. Consider removing all your finger rings and try going for a pair of shoes that is one size larger than your usual size. To avoid water retention in body, make sure to minimize your intake of salt. Also, try keeping your feet up as much as you can and do not forget to moisturize the swollen areas of your feet and hands from time-to-time to make them heal more quickly.

4. Make yourself a fan of your fan

Fans come in handy during summer and can help you deal well with all that heat you’ve been dealing with alone. An electric fan in your bedroom can help you stay comfortable and if you work, make sure your office or workplace is air-conditioned. You can also make use of a fold-up fan while you’re travelling in buses or trains.

5. This summer, be a mermaid

Swimming during summer can help you keep your body as well as your head cool. Being a gentle exercise, you could also visit a local pool, or better yet, a beach to enjoy dipping or paddling every now and then when you feel hot.

Make sure to get yourself a proper treatment of sunscreen, as your skin during pregnancy can be a lot more sensitive than usual.

6. Avoid direct sunlight

Want to go shopping or to take a stroll in a nearby park? Do it all, but choose a suitable time for doing outdoor activities, as going out when sun is at its best is obviously the worst idea ever. Choose the early morning or late evening for any outdoor activities as the weather will be much cooler at these times.
