It is really cute when kids begin speaking. Their constant babbling turns into sensible words, and by the time you realize that your child is actually speaking, they become unstoppable.

Often, you must have come across kids asking the most popular question. “Mommy?? Where do babies come from?!” and most of us have told them amazing fictional stories. You probably have told them, “I prayed so fervently so God was happy. Thus, he blessed us with you.”

However, leaving them in a loophole of such a fiction is not good. Children are curious little beings. They are inquisitive about everything they see. If your child ever asks you where babies come from, this is how you need to answer them.

1. Don’t change the topic and stick to the question

Children are small and if they pop this question out of the blue, you might feel a bit weirded out because you have got to give them “THE TALK”. It is important for you to be calm and completely relaxed when your kid asks you this question. It is quite natural for your kid to ask you this, especially if you’re expecting another baby.

2. Is your kid too young to know?

Not really. If your child is old enough to ask this question, s/he is old enough to know the answer. However, it is not necessary for you to talk about sex to him/her just yet. You can tell him/her about the other things about childbirth and save the major talk for later.

3. Use visual guides

For a 5-year-old kid, it is easy for you to explain the still unexplainable with the help of picture guide books. There are many books available for children to understand the surface knowledge about pregnancy. Using pictures, you can tell your child about how s/he was born.

4. Use easy to understand language

If you’re trying to explain to your child the concept of fertilization and the process that is required for the fertilization to occur, chances are your child will not understand anything and they will become terrified of babies and pregnancy.

Talk to them on a level that they can understand easily. For example, you could relate to a plant growing after the seeds are sown. Relate that to the egg and sperm fusion. This way, the kid’s mind won’t get cluttered with horrific images.

5. Use correct names

If you’re trying to explain to your 10-12 years old child how babies are born, you have to use the correct names for the body parts. Do not use nicknames like hoo-hoo (penis) or taco (vagina) because it will be misleading for the kids.

If you are having a second pregnancy, involve your child in it, so that they are aware of what happens during pregnancy. Let them show their support by being there for you throughout your pregnancy.

It is funny when kids ask you these questions, but it is in your hands to educate them by telling them the right facts.
