Sore throat in kids is common and two of the most likely causes of a child’s sore throat are viral and bacterial infections. The cold winter season is a time when most children suffer from sore throats. In most cases, there is no need to worry about a child’s sore throat if you take care of your child’s sore throat during winter months correctly. 

It can be difficult to determine the cause of sore throat based on symptoms alone so doing a laboratory test and examination is advisable.

Causes Of Sore Throat In Children During Winter

Some of the most common causes of a child’s sore throat during winter are 

  • Virtual infections: Some of the symptoms of viral infection to look out for are cough, hoarseness, congestion, runny nose, skin rash, redness of the eyes, and fever.
  • Bacterial Infections: Strep throat caused by a bacterium called Group A Streptococcus is the most common cause of sore throat during the winter in children over three years.

Treatment Of Sore Throat In Children During Winter

The treatment of sore throat depends on the cause of the infection. If a child’s sore throat during winter is caused by viral infections, your doctor is most likely to prescribe some pain relief medicines. But if the cause of the sore throat like strep throat which is caused by a bacterial infection then your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic. 

How Can You Take Care Of Your Child’s Sore Throat During Winter?

You can also help your child by:

  • Making sure he/she is drinking enough liquids to prevent dehydration.
  • Ensuring that they get enough rest.
  • Giving them salt water to gargle.
  • Feeding them a healthy diet that includes warm nutritious soups.
  • Giving them steam inhalation.
  • Sticking a vapour path to their clothes to provide them relief from runny or stuffy noses.

How To Prevent Your Child From Sore Throat During Winter?

As they say, prevention is better than cure, you can prevent your child from getting a sore throat during winter by following a few simple tips.

  • Make sure your child washes their hands thoroughly and regularly with a baby-safe hand wash, and teach them to wash their hands properly by paying attention to the parts between their fingers as well. 
  • Sanitising the surfaces where your child is most likely to touch.
  • Keeping them away from any person who is infected can sometimes be difficult but infection can be prevented if you teach them to avoid touching their mouth, eyes and nose without sanitising or washing their hands.
  • Keeping them well covered during winters.
  • Offering them small sips of lukewarm water throughout the day.
  • Feeding them wholesome nutritious meals to build their immunity.
  • Giving impotence to their hygiene.

All children experience sore throats at one point in their young lives as it is one of the most common childhood issues, what’s important is to try and keep them safe from the infection getting worse.
