What Are Active Acids?

An active acid is used to address specific skin-related issues like acne, dryness, ageing and sun damage. Actives are present in products in a modified form as they may undergo chemical transformation while preparing a solution. They are added to skin care products as per the proportion required for the different skin types. The most commonly used active acids are hyaluronic acid, retinol, niacinamide, alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), beta hydroxy acids (BHA),  benzoyl peroxide, ceramides, SPF, and vitamin C.

These active ingredients are each used to deal with different skin issues. AHAs and BHAs help in minimising blemishes, retinol helps renew skin cells and helps deal with hyperpigmentation, dark spots, uneven skin tone, and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid helps hydrate dry skin, while Vitamin C boosts collagen production and niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties that help to soothe irritated skin.
